Grupo Corpo was founded in 1975 by Paulo Pederneiras in Belo Horizonte, who brought along five brothers and sisters and some friends.
They were involved in Grupo Corpo's first piece, "Maria, Maria", which was choreographed by the argentinian Oscar Araiz.
Grupo Corpo has it's roots in the Pederneira's parent's House. The parents were supporting their children's ideas passionately.
Paulo Pederneiras is the director of the company and is also responsible for the lighting.
Rodrigo Pederneiras started as a dancer in the company. In 1981 he became it's choreographer.
Some people who belonged to Grupo Corpos in the beginning are still involved in the companie's work:
Pedro Pederneiras, technical director; Carmen Purri, class- and rehearsal-director; Miriam Pederneiras and Christina Castilho, organization.
Grupo Corpo is not only a dance company, it is also deeply involved in the social work of Belo Horizonte. In the house at "Av. dos Bandeirants" indigent children get the chance of being educated in dance and music. Working-rooms and teachers are contributed by Corpo.
